I’m here to teach you about the history of Milan and why it is such a big deal in the fashion industry. Keep reading for more information about how it got started as a fashion capital and what currently happens in the day-to-day events in this heartthrob of a city.

When did Milan get designated as a fashion capital?

Known for its exquisite trend-setting skills, Milan is and always will be one of the leading fashion capitals. Since the 20th century, designers have fled to Milan due to its status for setting trends and making its voice heard. The love for fashion in this country originally began around the 15th century when the women would wear their best jewelry and makeup as well as show off the embroidery on their dresses so that everyone would know about their high status. Milan was officially announced as the “fashion capital of the world” in 2009 by the Global Language Monitor. It tracked this record by how many times it was called the “fashion capital” as compared to other countries and cities. Milan is so beautiful and there is never enough time to fully take in the gorgeous sights here. This is probably one of the reasons that contributes to so many visitors during fashion week. Along with the fashion side of things, the food also makes Milan undoubtedly appetizing. One of the places that fashion professionals dine at during Fashion Week is Ceresio 7. It has the view of a lifetime as well as a pool.

What is the street style like in Milan?

The way that Milan natives pair their clothing is just unreal. They aren’t afraid to mix colors and patterns and we are here for it. They have no problem creating bold statements with their clothing and looking good doing it. Some of the styles that Milan natives bring in are colorful leathers, vibrant trench coats, different textures on clothing, mixing colors and patterns, etc. Another way they recreate fashion is by making their culture fashionable by putting their own spin on things. It is truly exceptional to witness something such as Milan fashion and I hope to see it in person one day. They set standards for us who just follow the trends and you never realize that until you really do your homework. The colors and the flare that each of them brings to the table is just so unique and so necessary. These styles leave us thirsty for more.

What does Milan fashion week look like?

So many events take place during Milan Fashion Week, however, lets look at it piece by piece. Overall, there are about 70 fashion shows in total as well as more than 80 presentations that are shown to the audience by the designers themselves. There are also lots of catwalk shows and static presentations. A static presentation is kind of the same as a catwalk show, but they are more up close and personal. Another event during the week consists of designer showrooms. Can you say paradise because I can! The best part of all is that Milan Fashion Week is open to the public. Milan Fashion Week will take place from September 20-26 for Spring 2023. If you go to Milan for fashion week and don’t network, then you are doing it wrong. It is the place to meet as many people as you can and get your name out there if it isn’t already. Gucci will return for this year’s spring fashion week.

What jobs are hiring?

There are several positions hiring now, such as FARFETCH, Bottega Veneta, etc. When you apply, be sure to attach your cover letter with information on that company so they know you did your homework. If you don’t see any job posting you like, that doesn’t mean that you dream job is not hiring.
